The Housing & Community Development Legal Clinic provides corporate and transactional legal assistance to organizations working in affordable housing and community development and is the only clinic at DePaul that teaches students to be a deal lawyer. You have the opportunity to negotiate and draft contracts, negotiate deals, research legal issues, draft client memoranda, evaluate business issues with the client and the client's business team, and engage in extensive client counseling. You will serve as the primary legal contact for at least one client and will work with a partner to allow for collaboration on relevant client issues. Potential clients include start-up and existing businesses, community organizations, tenant groups, condominiums, cooperatives, and others who need corporate legal assistance or legal assistance for a transaction. The clinic specializes in representing tenants in multifamily properties, as a tenants association, to negotiate for improvements to their property, and in representing tenants who seek to purchase their property and convert it into a cooperative or condominium.
The law clinic, without a doubt, prepared me for private practice next year. There are definitely times when the clinic takes up a lot of time, frustrates me, and provides me with an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. However, this was the biggest lesson for me: thatís exactly what life outside of law school will be like. Youíre going to feel like you donít have enough time, your client WILL frustrate you, and then youíre going to ďwow!Ē your client. But these ebbs and flows are just part of the game, and Iím sure glad that now, I get to hit the ground running next year, as opposed to feeling lost in the big, scary world outside of law school.
