Dean Weissenberger Appointed for Second Five-Year Term

On the strength of a highly positive report by the College of Law Dean Review Committee and a strong vote of confidence by the college's faculty, staff and students, Dean Glen Weissenberger has been appointed to serve a second five-year term as dean of the College of Law. In his first term, Dean Weissenberger was instrumental in raising the prestige, stature and reputation of the college, which has earned Top 100 status in the national law school rankings. The quality of the college's entering classes has improved each year as have the bar passage rates of the graduating classes. The entering class of 2006 welcomed more than 31 percent students of color, making DePaul one of the nation's most diverse law schools.

New Journal for Social Justice Established

The Center for Public Interest Law is proud to announce DePaul University College of Law's Journal for Social Justice. The Journal will passionately promote discussion of policy issues, encourage submissions of interdisciplinary work and expand student opportunities for learning. The Journal will offer legal professionals, practitioners, community-based leaders, academics and students the opportunity to voice their concerns, share their experiences, offer unique viewpoints, and propose solutions. Journal articles will reflect the experiences of the authors and thought-provoking commentaries will inspire readers. The Journal will not be limited to law review-style articles, but will explore alternative publication formats and expand content options to broaden access and better engage readers.

Under the supervision of Professor Leonard Cavise, four students have worked since the fall of 2006 to establish the Journal for Social Justice and they look forward to the publication of the inaugural edition in August 2007.

Alumni interested in writing for the Journal or serving on the Peer Review Board can contact the editors: Susan DeCostanza, Alysia Franklin, Jennifer Keys or Kayleigh Van Poolen, by email at DePaulJ4SJ@gmail.com or phone (312) 362-8374

Faculty News

Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni has been awarded the prestigious Hague Prize for International Law in a ceremony that took place recently in the Netherlands at the Peace Palace in The Hague. Read More

Professor Roberta Kwall recently returned from Israel where she served as a panelist for the Exploring the Boundaries of IP Law Conference sponsored by the Radzyner School of Law in Herzliya. The conference, held June 26 and 27, brought together leading Intellectual Property Scholars from North America, Europe and Israel. Professor Kwall, who presented on Originality in the Context of Moral Rights, was one of only five scholars from North America to present at the conference.

Professor Susan Bandes and Professor David Franklin were panelists for the American Constitution Society's Fourth Annual Supreme Court Term Review, which took place June 26 at the offices of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP. Professor Bandes addressed several of the Supreme Court's death penalty decisions from this term, as well as two Fourth Amendment decisions - one involving a passenger's standing to sue and the other involving a high speed chase. Professor Franklin discussed the Supreme Court's decision overturning the EPA's refusal to regulate greenhouse gases and its (now superseded) decision not to hear the case of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Career Services Update

Are you happy in your job and want to help others? Volunteer to conduct mock interviews with law students and new alumni. As a volunteer in this capacity, conducting a mock interview entails "interviewing" a job seeker for a fictional position, and then offering suggestions for improvement. The time commitment will accord with your schedule and interest. This is a valuable way for alumni to contribute to DePaul University College of Law.

Are you undergoing the job search process and preparing to interview? Take advantage of mock interviewing. A mock interview allows you to interact with an attorney who "interviews" you for an imaginary, but realistic, legal job. The lawyer then will provide you feedback regarding your interviewing skills and how to improve them. Additionally, Law Career Services offers print and electronic resources addressing the fine art of interviewing. Counselors also are more than happy to meet with you to practice typical interview questions on a more informal basis.

Interviewing is an art and practice really does improve your skills. We would like to increase our pool of volunteer mock interviewers and we encourage job seekers to take advantage of mock interviewing and our other resources. Whether you would like to volunteer or brush up on your interviewing skills, please contact Law Career Services at 312-362-8377. We also encourage you to visit our website and our job search site for more information.
