DePaul University College of Law invites you to participate in an exciting summer law program in Beijing, China. The program focuses on the legal principles and planning related to international transactions in the Asia-Pacific region and provides a comprehensive overview of China’s legal system. Our host institution is Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), one of the most prestigious schools in China. BFSU is designated a “key” university by the Ministry of Education, and its graduates include most of China’s diplomats and foreign relations officials. BFSU is located in northwest Beijing, a convenient location for exploration of all areas of the city. It is close to other major universities and the downtown area can be reached easily by taxi or public transportation.

Moot Court Competition: A student team is selected to participate in the Intellectual Property Moot Court sponsored by the Supreme People’s Court of China and BFSU. DePaul’s 2007 team won the first place trophy in a competition that included teams from 13 Chinese universities, the China State Intellectual Property Office and a leading Chinese intellectual property law firm. Students interested in this competition should contact the program director.

Field Trips:The program includes a number of excursions to Beijing legal institutions, including the Supreme People’s Court, local trial courts, government ministries and law firms, as well as a series of informal meetings with local experts on various aspects of Chinese law and culture.

ABA-Approved Credits: The program is accredited by the American Bar Association and participants earn five (5) credit hours upon successful completion of all coursework. However, acceptance of credit or grade for any course taken in the program is subject to determination by each student’s home school. Please note that it is unlikely participation in any foreign summer program will accelerate graduation. Students interested in acceleration should consult their home schools to review this issue.

Students: The program is limited to 30 students. In prior years, students from DePaul and more than 30 other U.S. law schools participated. To facilitate interaction between U.S. and Chinese law students, a number of BFSU law students, who are fluent in English, participate in classes and extracurricular activities.

Admission: Admission to the program is open to students who have completed at least one year of full-time or part-time study in good standing at an accredited law school. A letter of good standing from the student’s school is required.

Cultural Tours and Activities

DragonBeijing Tours: The program includes tours of the major historic and cultural sites in and around Beijing, including the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Ming Tombs, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace. Ample time is provided for leisurely walks and bike rides around the fascinating old hutongs and new skyscrapers of Beijing.

Explore China: To provide a comprehensive view of ancient and modern China, weekend trips to Shanghai and Xian are planned.

  • Shanghai, located in eastern China near the mouth of the famous Yangtze River, is the nation’s most important port, commercial hub and industrial center. Along the city waterfront is a famous boulevard known as the Bund where numerous European-style buildings were built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s major shopping street, is lined with an astounding variety of shops and restaurants. Across the river from the Bund is the Pudong area, the heart of China’s economic renaissance, exhibiting new commercial skyscrapers, luxury apartments, a modern stock exchange and futuristic museums.
  • Xian (Shee-on), the capital of Shaanxi Province in central China, is an ancient capital of imperial China. Humans have inhabited the city for over 6,000 years, and it is a treasure trove of archeological wonders. The city’s most famous site is the Army of Terra-cotta Warriors, consisting of nearly 7,000 life-size statutes of soldiers, horses and chariots. The warriors guard the burial site of a Qin Dynasty emperor first unearthed by local farmers in 1974. Although the army has been buried for more than 2,000 years, the faces on the statutes are clear and the soldiers’ swords sharp.
