DePaul Intellectual Property students Craig W. Mandell and Szymon Gurda took first and second prizes respectively in the 68th Annual Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, ASCAP®.
Participating students prepared a manuscript, not to exceed 50 pages, on any facet of Copyright Law. Both Mandell's paper, Balance of Powers: Recognizing the Uruguay Round Agreement Act's Anti-Bootlegging Provisions as a Constitutional Exercise of Congress's Commerce Clause Authority, and Gurda's paper, Application of the First Sale Doctrine to Digital Goods, will most likely be published either through ASCAP or other organizations. Additionally, first prize papers from schools nationwide will be considered for a national ASCAP award.
The Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition was designed to promote the objectives of ASCAP, an organization created to protect the rights of performance artists and the only one of its kind that is directly monitored by music publishers, composers, and songwriters.
