Family Law Center Funds 22 Students to do Public Service Work

The Schiller DuCanto and Fleck Family Law Center has funded 22 students to do public service work in family law areas through its new Family Law Fellows Awards Program and Summer Service Awards Program. Fellows and Summer Service Award recipients receive a financial award and the opportunity to hone their legal skills while helping vulnerable clients in need of legal services.

The Family Law Fellows Program began in academic year 2006-2007, and 58 students joined. This spring, seven of these students were awarded a paid placement at a public interest agency to work 10 hours per week for 14 weeks during spring semester. The Spring Fellows Service Award recipients were:

  • Yvette Barclay ----- Chicago Public Schools
  • Timnetra Burress ---- Cook County Public Guardian, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Jonneida Davis ----- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division
  • Nora Grace Flaherty - Cook County Public Guardian, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Beatriz Hernandez --- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division
  • Carolyn Norton ----- Legal Assistance Foundation
  • Rachelle Roth ----- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division

In addition, the Center has awarded 15 students with Summer Service Awards. They will work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks this summer. The Summer Service Award recipients are:

  • Ashlee Cuza ---- Cook County Public Guardian, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Jennifer Frick ---- Chicago Public Schools, special needs children
  • Juliana Garcia-Uribe ---- National Immigrant Justice Center, sex trafficking of young girls
  • Danielle Ghiloni ---- Cook Public Guardian, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Melanie Greer ---- Cook County Public Guardian, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Kathryn Gumbel ---- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division
  • Laura Hartin ---- Cook County Public Guardian, Adult Estates & Elderly
  • (Holly Howes ---- States Attorney, special award for elder law work
  • Kathryn Idzik ---- Cook County States Attorney Adult Estates & Elderly
  • Megan Murphy ---- Cook County States Attorney, Child Abuse & Neglect
  • Theresita Perez ---- Cook County Public Guardian, Domestic Relations Division
  • Tiffany Price ---- LifeSpan, Domestic Violence
  • Anne Sanicki ---- Chicago Coalition for the Homeless
  • Jeremy Shimada ---- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division
  • Suma Udupa ---- Office of the Public Defender, Juvenile Division

In academic year 2007-2008, the Center plans to fund 14-16 second- and third-year Family Law Fellows to work in public interest during the fall and spring semesters and 15 first-year Summer Service Awards to work in public interest next summer.
