Academic Programs
Sydney, Australia
June 25 – July 19, 2009
As the capital of New South Wales—the most heavily populated state of Australia—Sydney is the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan city. Situated on one of the world’s most beautiful and famous harbours, Sydney’s many highlights include the the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Blue Mountains, and a large array of beautiful beaches. It is both an educational and legal center for the State of New South Wales and for Australia generally.
A member of the British Commonwealth, Australia’s legal system incorporates both British practices and common law, but not exclusively. Its antitrust law for example, pays close attention to U.S. cases and policies. Located near Indonesia, and increasingly drawn into China’s growing economy, it is a major exporter of iron ore and other metals and raw materials, and has close trading ties with New Zealand, China, Japan and other countries in South Asia and the Oceania region. The excellence of its universities has allowed it to become an educational hub for the entire region.
Academics
DePaul’s partner institution will be the University of New South Wales (UNSW), whose law school, faculty, and facilities are considered among the best in Australia. The program will be held on UNSW’s main campus, just ten minutes from downtown Sydney. Focusing on Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands) and the South Asia region, the program will offer the following courses:
- International Competition Law (2 credit hours)
- Comparative Criminal Procedure (2 credit hours)
- Unique Aspects of Australian Law & Legal System (1 credit hour)
ABA-Approved Credits:
Pending accreditation by the American Bar Association (ABA), participants will earn five (5) credit hours upon successful completion of all required coursework. An ABA decision on accreditation is expected soon. In the unlikely event that the ABA declines to accredit the program, all deposits and fees will be returned to applicants who no longer wish to participate in the program. Acceptance of credits and grades for any courses taken in the program remains subject, however, to determination by each student’s home school. Please note that it is unlikely that participation in any foreign study abroad program can accelerate graduation. Students interested in acceleration should consult their home schools to review this issue.
Cultural Tours and Activities
Field Trips: The program includes a number of field trips to local and national legal institutions, including the Federal Court, the New South Wales Supreme Court, the state office of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the Department of Public Prosecutions and several private law firms.
Sydney: There will be tours of Sydney Harbour, by day and night, as well as weekend trips to area beaches and the Blue Mountains. Cultural programs introducing students to aspects of Aboriginal life and history in Australia also will be provided.
Weekend Trip to Melbourne: Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city. It is the capital of the State of Victoria, the business and cultural capital of the country, and home to a number of spectacular art museums, several great universities and many points of historical interest. It is also within close proximity to Australia’s “gold rush” towns, more beautiful beaches and several world famous wine-making regions.
Optional Trips: There will be at least one weekend during the program when students will have the option to travel on their own. The program director will be available to assist interested participants with travel arrangements to the Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Uluru (Ayers Rock) or the Great Barrier Reef.
Cancellation
DePaul University reserves the right to cancel the program if enrollment is insufficient or because of extraordinary circumstances such as natural disaster, war, political unrest, or similar emergency. If a cancellation occurs, participants will receive a full refund within 20 days of the cancellation, and DePaul staff will provide assistance to arrange enrollment in a similar program, if available, upon request.
