Network Access

Before access to the network, the following basic requirements must be met:

Hardware requirements:
486 or higher Intel-based laptops for Microsoft operating systems, Apple Mac for Mac users

System requirements:
Microsoft Windows 2000, XP with SP 2, Vista and Mac OS X. Minimum version requirement is 10.2 with the latest software updates installed.

Internet access in the law school can be done through Ethernet Wired Network or Ethernet Wireless Network

Ethernet Wired Networking

Requirements

An Ethernet RJ45 cable. The cable should be category 5 (CAT5) or better. Price range is from $5 up depending on the length of the cable. Usually a 7ft cable is sufficient.

An RJ45 connection on the laptop, (the RJ45 ethernet port looks very similar to the modem port, but is actually wider than the modem port connection). Most laptops are equipped with an Ethernet port. On old laptops, a separate Ethernet card is necessary.

An active network port in the school. The network ports are recognizable by their orange color. In the law library, check for ports labeled "Active". Ask the lab attendant if you need to connect your laptop in the law lab.

Connect the Ethernet cable to both the laptop and the network port. Your laptop is now ready to access the internet.

Ethernet Wireless Networking*

Several computer models come equipped with built-in 802.11b or 802.11g technology and do not require a separate wireless card to install.

The College of Law supports the wireless 802.11b and 802.11g protocols. All wireless access points and adapters at the school operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency.

The wireless coverage extends for the entire college of law from the 4 th floor to the 11floor including classrooms, labs and lounge area.

Wireless card. The university supports the use of Cisco Aironet cards. If you plan to use another card please make sure it meets the following requirements:

Software setup in accordance with university specifications. To connect to the university wireless network, you must install your card and setup a secure access profile. For assistance go to http://is.depaul.edu/communication/network/wireless.asp.

Please make sure to read the wireless usage policy.

Note:
Before you purchase a network card, make sure your computer is not already equipped with a corresponding built-in network connection. Also make sure your notebook has a free PCMCIA slot for the wireless add-on card.
