SELECTION PROCESS
The Journal for Social Justice engages in a unique and multi-stage process to select articles for publication. In keeping with its social justice mission, the Journal engages each of its members in the selection process.
The Article Selection Editor initially reviews every submission to the Journal. The Article Selection Editor reads each submission for relevance to social justice, length, and quality of citation. The submission should have at least some relevance to the social justice areas referenced in the Journal mission statement. Length should be 5,000 to 15,000 words, and citations should not exceed 150. Exceptions to these limits may be made in extraordinary circumstances, if the article is especially relevant or innovative.
If the submission does not satisfy these minimum requirements, the Article Selection Editor notifies the author of the Journal's rejection. If the submission does satisfy these minimum requirements, the Article Selection Editor sends the submission to the entire Journal membership.
Every journal member then reviews the article indivdually, and each member evaluates the article on a 100 point scale using 10 critera. Criteria include, but are not limited to: audience appeal, proposed solutions, strengh of idea, uniqueness of insight, and relevance to social justice. The Article Selection Editor compiles evaluations and posts scores to the entire membership. Articles with average scores below 75 are automatically rejected. Articles with average scores above 75 are discussed by the Article Selection Committee, which votes to accept or reject by majority vote. Articles accepted by the committee are then referred to the Editorial Board.
The Editorial Board will then take a majority vote to accept or reject. Accepted articles are referred to the Peer Review Board for advice. The Editorial Board, in turn, can and has rejected articles for failing peer review. Articles are only accepted for publication after at least one peer review and a favorable majority vote by Editorial Board members.
